The art of navigation: University of Calgary

When the University of Calgary needed to update their signage, we helped Cygnus Group understand how students learned to navigate a very confusing campus through an ethnographic study.

Rather than use maps or signs, students largely navigated by the shapes of buildings and the campus art – art such as the Prairie Chicken, the Rock and the “Other Piece of the Rock.”

While this is very cool, we helped identify a clear need to create bold new signage at forks in the road, on the sides of buildings and throughout the indoor maze where only a subtle change in floor indicates that you have moved from one building to the next.

No longer will students have to learn the campus by getting lost over and over again or by following crowds from one class to the next.
